It all starts with the cannabis plant. The cannabis plant, a member of the Cannabaceae family, is very complex, containing hundreds of chemical entities and at least 100 biologically active chemical compounds or “cannabinoids,” according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The most commonly known compounds are delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), which can have very different effects.

Cannabis, which historians say has been cultivated by humans for over 6,000 years, has been used for textiles, paper, rope, sails, building materials, and the first pair of jeans made by Levi Strauss. It has also more famously been used for its THC content as a mind-altering or psychoactive drug called marijuana, weed, pot, and about a million other nicknames.
