Austin leaders are gathering information and recommendations from other cities on the matter, according to a March 25 memorandum from Assistant City Manager Rey Arellano to Mayor Steve Adler and the City Council.
The memo said members of the public safety committee expressed interest in allowing the use of low-THC cannabis for employees, “particularly for sworn civil service employees who may be experiencing PTSD.”
City officials asked agencies in other states that have passed laws to legalize marijuana about the policies they have implemented. Of the 20 cities that they contacted, only Boston said that its employees are allowed to use prescription marijuana.
