Kentucky marked a historic milestone last week by issuing its first two medical marijuana cards. Governor Andy Beshear announced that approximately 2,200 applications have already been approved, with only 66 denials—most due to technical issues that can be resolved. The program has seen significant engagement, with 333 registered healthcare providers across 75 counties certifying over 6,500 patients.

Merissa Khumalo, one of the first cardholders, shared her excitement about gaining access to medical cannabis for managing her multiple sclerosis. “This will bring a lot of Kentuckians peace of mind,” she said, reflecting on the relief cannabis has provided her in other states.

While cards are now available, dispensaries in Kentucky are not yet stocked. Beshear expressed optimism that products will hit shelves within the next couple of months. He also urged Congress to protect patients’ Second Amendment rights, ensuring no one must choose between medication and constitutional freedoms.
