A 44-year-old U.K. man who says he self-medicates with homemade cannabis oil to treat his cancer symptoms was in court this week facing possession charges.
The man was stopped in his vehicle by police last January, who alleged he was driving erratically, per Gazette News. A search of the car revealed three large bags of cannabis.
Police then searched the man’s home where they found a small amount of pot. The man admitted to two counts of possession of cannabis, but denied a charge of cannabis with intent to supply.
The man’s lawyer argued that the defendant used the plant to produce cannabis oil and took three doses a day to treat symptoms associated with his Hodgkin lymphoma diagnosis, including pain.
The man was prescribed painkillers, but said the side effects were severe. He found cannabis to be a suitable alternative. The court also heard that the man had two previous convictions for cannabis possession.
