A groundbreaking clinical trial has revealed that medicinal cannabis could be a life-altering treatment for individuals suffering from Tourette syndrome. The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine: Evidence, demonstrated a significant reduction in motor and vocal tics in just six weeks.
Led by Dr. Philip Mosley and co-funded by the University of Sydney’s Lambert Initiative, the research involved 22 adult patients with severe Tourette symptoms. The double-blind study showed that carefully dosed oral THC and CBD not only reduced tics but also alleviated associated symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder and anxiety.
For 35-year-old Chris Wright, the treatment has been transformative, reducing his tics by about 50% and allowing him to read a book for the first time in a decade. This breakthrough offers hope to the estimated 1% of the population affected by Tourette syndrome, potentially improving their quality of life dramatically.
