It seems like just yesterday that many New Jerseyans had to drive well over an hour to their nearest marijuana dispensary.

Compared to many of the other 21 states that have legalized weed, the 29 dispensaries in the Garden State seems like a sprinkling. Massachusetts, for example, has nearly 400 dispensaries. But compared to even three years ago, there are more than four times the number of locations.

According to the New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission, there were nearly $139 million in marijuana sales across the state in the second quarter of 2022, including nearly $80 million in recreational sales. And there are still another 116,000 registered medical marijuana patients in New Jersey.

Under the New Jersey marijuana legalization laws, you can only purchase up to 1 ounce of cannabis — 4 grams of concentrates or oils or 1,000 milligrams of edible products — at one time.
