Donald Trump is considering reclassifying cannabis from a Schedule I drug to Schedule III, a move that would ease federal restrictions but stop short of national legalization. Currently, cannabis sits alongside heroin under Schedule I, defined as having “no accepted medical use.” Yet 40 states permit cannabis for medical purposes, and 24 of those also allow recreational use.

In nine states, cannabis remains fully illegal.

Trump has said he is reviewing the issue, but his administration includes strong anti-cannabis voices. Whether he follows through remains uncertain.
