Montana dispensaries are now operating under new state rules governing marijuana packaging, inventory tracking, and product recalls, according to a report from The Marijuana Herald, which cited Montana Department of Revenue rules. Labeling and seed-to-sale tracking requirements took effect August 22, 2026, while a separate recall rule became active July 11.

Under the labeling rules, packaging must be child-resistant and opaque and must carry state-mandated warnings covering anxiety, paranoia, psychosis, vomiting, and pregnancy and nursing risks, along with a prohibition on driving while impaired. Packages must include a QR code linking to substance-use resources, and dispensaries must post state-issued consumer education materials at the point of sale.

The tracking rules require plants to be tagged once they reach 12 inches in height and require businesses to reconcile physical and recorded inventory daily. Recall plans must name a coordinator and lay out procedures for isolating and destroying affected product, with public notification required within 48 hours of a recall and remediation completed within 30 business days.
