Despite overwhelming public support for medical marijuana, former Governor Pete Ricketts and Attorney General Mike Hilgers continue to warn of its societal risks. The failed LB677 bill, which sought to clarify regulatory authority, deepened divides among lawmakers like Senators Jared Storm and Dan Lonowski, who fear it edges toward full legalization. Governor Jim Pillen insists the state will proceed cautiously, keeping the program strictly medical and under the new Nebraska Medical Cannabis Commission’s control. The commission is set to resume regulatory discussions in January as debate over its scope intensifies.
