A new clinical trial has found that both cannabidiol (CBD) oil and hemp seed oil were associated with improved jaw function over time in patients with myofascial pain disorder (MPD) of the temporomandibular region. The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study enrolled 54 adults with moderate to severe jaw pain, assigning them to either oral CBD or a hemp seed oil placebo and tracking outcomes for up to three months.
Researchers reported no statistically significant difference in pain reduction between the two groups, with Visual Analog Scale scores remaining similar throughout the study period. However, both groups showed statistically significant within-group gains on the Jaw Functional Limitation Scale, suggesting that oral treatment, regular monitoring, or other aspects of care may support better day-to-day jaw use despite unchanged pain levels. The trial, summarized by The Marijuana Herald, adds nuance to the debate over CBD’s role in pain management; read the full report here.
