After years of delays, Alabama has approved its first medical cannabis business licenses, signaling a major shift in the state’s approach to marijuana policy. The Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission granted licenses to four companies — RJK Holdings, CCS of Alabama, GP6 Wellness, and Yellowhammer Medical Dispensaries — paving the way for as many as 12 dispensaries to open statewide in 2026.

While medical use is now legal for registered patients, recreational marijuana remains prohibited. Possession without authorization carries fines and potential jail time, and smokable or edible products are still banned under state law. Approved forms include capsules, tinctures, and topical treatments.
