The law increases the number of licensed dispensaries from three to fifteen and allows satellite locations, making cannabis more accessible under the Texas Compassionate Use Program (TCUP). Physicians will also be permitted to prescribe inhalers and vape pens, while eligibility expands to patients with traumatic brain injury, Crohn’s disease, and chronic pain.
Supporters argue the expansion is a “game changer” for patients, though debate continues at the state Capitol over regulating hemp products containing THC, which some veterans say remain more affordable than medical cannabis. While dispensaries prepare to scale up, lawmakers remain stalled on forging a regulatory path for hemp.
